Behind Waymon’s buttoned-down exterior lies a man with a keen sense of adventure and exploration. He has taken a 300-foot tethered free-fall jump over an African gorge at Victoria Falls, dined on a “fabulous” Oryx steak at Joe’s Beer Shack in Namibia, and visited dung huts while on safari in Kenya. He played defensive end at Vanderbilt against Bear Bryant’s famous Alabama teams. He has baseball card collection that includes Willie Mays, Mickie Mantle, Lou Brock and Pete Rose.
Waymon began his career as a bond trader at First American (now Regions), rising to Senior Vice President before moving to wealth management and institutional sales at Robinson Humphrey (now SunTrust Robinson Humphrey) in 1990. He left for a stent in the telecom world during the dot com boom. Prior to joining Avondale Partners, Waymon was in the Nashville office of Smith Barney before its sale to Morgan Stanley.
With more than 30 years’ experience in financial and corporate management, Waymon now leads Avondale’s wealth management group, with responsibilities for recruiting new advisors and growing the firm’s assets under management. He is also a member of the firm’s operating committee.
Waymon traces his Tennessee roots back to Tiptonville in the 1850’s, where his ancestors raised corn, soybeans and cotton for a living, and hunted and fished around Reelfoot Lake for fun. An avid hunter and fisherman himself, Tipton claims, “There are no bad hunts if you choose your hunting partners carefully.” He has endured three knee and shoulder surgeries, but he remains an avid golfer having played some of the best courses in the world. (Turnberry in Scotland is his favorite course.)
In the Nashville community, Waymon is past President of the Nashville ECON Club; a director for Republic Schools, Inc. with charter schools in Nashville and Jackson, Mississippi; an elder and past treasurer of First Presbyterian Church; a board member of the CFA Society; and on the board of a private family company. He received his MBA from Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management after earning his bachelor’s degree at Vanderbilt as well. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst, 1990.
“The best fish I caught was a 24” wild stream trout in Winter Park. That guy had been in there for years just waiting for me.” Waymon
